Help... I Have To Give a Speech
59How to Give a Speech
Is there anything more frightening that standing up in front of a room full of people and then talking about something that might not interest them?
Be Confident...
... don't let them see your fear. Just remember that there are other people in the room that can really use what you are about to tell them! If you weren't trying to help them, you wouldn't be there in the first place!
Don't Slouch
Check your posture. You are important and what you have to say is important.
Lets Get Started
Start your introduction and use your facial expression to help draw in your listeners. This is where you grab their attention.
Look At Faces...
Don't stare over your listeners heads. Pick out about a half dozen of your listeners and talk to each one, giving them your undivided attention. This makes them feel important and they will sit up and listen to what you have to say... because you made them feel important. And by seeking them out throughout your speech, and finding that they are listening intently, will make delivering your speech, so much easier.
Slow Down and Speak Slowly
Don't talk too quickly. It's an easy trap to fall into when you are nervous. Talk slowly and let all those amazing words that you put together, sink in.
Those Cue Cards... they are just backup!
You don't need your cue cards. Yes, they are there if you need them, but by this time, you have recited your speech so many times, it simply flows. Deliver your speech from your heart and never forget that what you have to say will make a difference!
Okay, you are done...
Thank your audience and then cross the stage. You did an amazing job!

There was a time when I won't get up and say something impromptu because my mind would go blank. In class, I would never raise my hand and ask a question.
Then I realised something. When I am trying to say something, I would also be thinking about the impression that I am giving, worried that I will say something wrong, wondering if the girl beside me likes me and... a million other things. It is no wonder that my mind goes blank because it does not have the capacity for anything else!
Nowadays, when I have something to say, I just say it, shutting out any other thoughts I might have. Works for me. :)
